Bryn Mawr Real Estate and Community Guide

Bryn Mawr straddles two counties and three townships. Located just west of Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr lies in Lower Merion Township as well as Radnor and Haverford townships. The name means “high hill” in Welsh. The town was established in 1704 by a Welsh tobacco farmer who built a large manor and called it Bryn Mawr. In approximately 1869, the Pennsylvania Railroad furthered the growth of the community by subdividing property and offering land for sale which led to Bryn Mawr becoming a thriving town.

Over time Bryn Mawr became an exclusive community known for its beautiful estates as well as excellent educational facilities including Bryn Mawr Public Schools, Shipley and Baldwin Schools, and the prestigious Bryn Mawr College. Bryn Mawr is known also for its clubs including the Merion Cricket Club, the Radnor Hunt Club, and the Bryn Mawr Polo Club, all established in the 1800’s.

Today, Bryn Mawr offers a many new shopping opportunities including the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, specialty shops, restaurants, live music at the Milk Boy, coffee bars, and bookstores.
