Historic Main Line, PA
The
Pennsylvania region now known as the Main Line was originally
settled in the 1600's. It was then that William Penn sold the
land to Welsh Quakers in search of the challenges and
opportunities in the New World. By the 1800's the Pennsylvania
Railroad made its way through the region, connecting
Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, and eventually Chicago.
It was about this time that wealthy Philadelphia families began looking outside of the city for vacation homes, retreats, and primary homes away from the bustling city. Soon the towns of the Main Line were populated with grand mansions and sprawling estates belonging to some of the wealthiest families in the country. Many of these homes are still standing today, and serve as a reminder of the rich, early history of the United States.
Today, the Main Line railroad is still a vital part of the transportation system that connects the communities of Ardmore, Berwyn, Bryn Mawr, Daylesford, Devon, Haverford, Merion, Narberth, Overbrook, Paoli, Radnor, Rosemont, St. Davids, Strafford, Wayne, Wynnewood, and Villanova.
